Expressionist dance is a form of artistic dance in which the individual and artistic presentation of emotions is an essential part. It emerged in the early 20th century in Europe as a counter-movement to classical ballet which was perceived as strict, mechanical and tightly bound to fixed and conventional forms. Expressionist dance opposed artistic stagnation and placed more emphasis on spirit and emotion.
Based on the principles of expressionist dance, the collection of the same name – which was designer Irene Roupacia’s first – was based on the freedom of movement through clothes and the emergence of emotions released by wearing clothes whose lines are both free and feminine.
